Day +5, Sunday

Photo of the Day: My nurses, clearing the air out of one of my lines. Nadine was called in by Patricia for a Tacrolimus – a new immunosuppressive drug – Check. Meanwhile, Bart started singing the sweet beeping song of his people, indicating air bubbles. Not messing around, these two simply unhooked me and dumped the fluid into the trash. Nurses are awesome.

All in all, Sunday was a pretty good day.

The start was a tad rough, meaning that I peed at 12:02 am, and then used the toilet paper, my 48-hour “pee-every-two-hours-purgatory” not ending until 10 am. At 5 am, after sleeping in spurts not more than 60 minutes in two days, I was DONE.

DONE.

And then Bart, in his infinite wisdom, started beeping. Or singing the song of his people, as you may.

I was told that after completing an Ironman (for those of you who didn’t know me when I used to race triathlon, they consist of a 2.4 mile swim + 112 mile bike + 26.2 mile run. Yes, there are all sorts of 4 letter words to describe. Take your pick) – I was told that you NEVER EVER make big, life changing decisions. No buying a house, having a baby, etc. It’s an emotional high and anything can be justified. Well, my friends, the same can be said about emotional lows. Like when you’ve peed approximately 20.1 Liters or 5.3 gallons of fluid in 48 hours after not sleeping.

Started watching “The Great” on Hulu/Prime today. I love it! Catherine’s look says how I feel about 5 gallons of fluid passing through my system.

Thankfully I have the swipe-purchase of Amazon disabled on my phone. And I was THIS CLOSE to purchasing a very expensive pair of noise cancelling headphones, or whatever they’re called (You see famous people and airplane goers sporting them all the time and they are really not my thing.) Until Bart came into my life. Thankfully, my nurse came in to shut Bart up, and some common sense ensued. So I did my research and found a “cheap” but well reviewed, more budget friendly ANKER pair. I like ANKER – I backpack with their charger, and we have a robovac named Harry from them. So I pulled the trigger.

And then peed again.

When I got up for the day, I felt better. Dr. Luke came in just as I had made my bed, so I didn’t feel sloppy. I apologized for my hideous pjs, but what can you say? That was followed by Dr. P who prefers when my body keeps things boring (which it’s doing by behaving) and later Dr. Noa, who along with Patricia gave me a round of applause for calling ATP “adenosine triphosphate”. Thank you 9th grade biology. (If I was going to remember any mineral, the “energy in cells” one was it). The short of it: my body did and is doing really well. Knock on wood. We are now starting the Immunosuppresive stage of transplant.

First though, Patricia had to untangle ALL of my lines. I’ve had so many different things enter my bloodstream – my lines looked like spaghetti.

The rest of the day was low key. I read, watched a few episodes of The Great, chatted with Andy, wore a cute button hat and took Bart for a walk. And I stopped having to pee every 2 hours. That makes me happy.

From the 7th floor, looking towards Walter Reed but you can’t tell because of the rain.

Tomorrow is more of the same, except that paper products from Amazon may be arriving. Goody! I’m finding that boring and low key is good, and at this stage of things, I’m perfectly OK with that.

  2. Glad to see you’re keeping your spirits up. Yes, noise cancelling headphones are an essential item! I remember my machine beeped a cuckoo that sounded like the 2nd movement of Beethoven 6. The other beep was a tritone. 😝 Sounds like you’re in a wonderful hospital, keep up the good work! 💕

  3. Boring is good as you march on to victory. Your humor is great and it helps see both you and your many followers through this project. Tell Bart to behave. We are with you. Long live boring.
